This year the public holidays fall on the following days:

Calendar showing from 24 Dec 2017 to 6 Jan 2018, with Christmas/ New Year public holidays circled in red

Some things to remember when paying wages over this period:

  • If a public holiday falls on a day your employee usually works, they are entitled to a paid day off.

  • You can only require your employee to work a public holiday if it is written in their employment agreement.

  • If an employee works on a public holiday work AND it is a day they normally work you must:

    1. pay the employee time and a half for the hours worked, and;

    2. provide them with another paid day off at a later date (day in lieu)

  • The employee is entitled to a full alternative day off (day in lieu), regardless of how many hours they worked on the public holiday.

  • Employees won't be entitled to a day in lieu if they only ever work public holidays or wouldn't normally have worked that day.

Remember, if you need some help working out public holiday entitlements this year, our employment, HR and payroll specialist, Vicki Cozens, is only a phone call or e-mail away.
